Levi’s Vintage Clothing – Like It’s 1933

Break in the blog posts of the trip to say what’s going on in the SP: House, Levi s. A cultural space in Santa Cecília, free entry and with a packed calendar of exhibitions, festivals, concerts, yoga sessions, movie theaters, and many other things that permeate through the lifestyle of the american brand, including a shop with products LVC at special prices.

Levi’s Vintage Clothing – Like It’s 1933

The LVC is Levi’s Vintage Clothing, a division of the vintage Levi’s that plays the products of the past, exploring the rich history of the brand. The jeans pants 501 historical, are made in the United States, and the majority of the clothes in Portugal. I will take the leaves of the event to do a review of the 501 1933, the year in which the jeans supposedly gave goodbye to the suspenders.

The Levis 501 1933 had dowels for the belt, but still had the adjustable buckle and buttons for suspenders, providing more than one way to use the pants. The cut of the leg is the widest among all 501, reflecting the fashion of the time, despite playing modern to be a little more narrow. The waist is also quite high, good for anyone who likes to use the pants to the inside. Unlike trousers regular Levi’s, and like the other jeans from LVC, it is made in the usa by Cone Mills, the factory partner of the brand for more than a century.

Suspenders were accessories considered to be underwear that should never be seen in public. You know-that suspenders visible were considered indecent until at least 1938, when the police of NY tried to ban men from using them without the jacket. No one knows for sure because the accessory fell into disuse, but it probably has to do with the lowering of the waistband of the pants and the casualização (is there?) of male clothing. It is believed that the first time that the 501 had the belt loop for the belt was in 1927, reflecting the popularization of the new accessory. In 1933, increasingly more owners have opted for dress up his jeans with a belt instead of suspenders. They then cut the strip to the buckle and tore out the buttons of the suspender, and some shops already had the scissors ready to cut out these details for customers. And so this was the last 501 to have both options.

Even outside of fashion, suspenders are much better to hold the pants, especially of those who have the belly. They allow the pants to stay on the natural waist, and is cut to accommodate the belly, because the pants is “suspended” by the strap of the suspender, rather than pressed against the belly, and today there is no rule about showing the suspenders. It is very cool with a t-shirt type henley. The mouth of the pant is very wide, good for use with boot more largadão, or so you can bend it, bending the bar before turning to leave more slim.

The detail unique to this 501 1933 is the label hidden under the leather patch. The little tag of white cloth has a water blue, and the letters NRA, the logo of the National Recovery Act, the Levi Strauss & Co. has been allowed to use because they have complied with the rules of a labor program of national recovery, created by president Franklin Roosevelt during the Depression of the 1930s. The play has the tag and each jeans line 501 has its surprise, faithfully reproduced by Levi s.It is a reminder to you as well cool for a brand that lives of their inheritance, but if I’m not mistaken has no factory in the United States.

Another detail that we no longer see today are the rivets apparent on the pocket and the rivet in the crotch. The rivets were away during the War (along with the arch in the pocket, which happened to be painted rather than sewn) to reduce expenses of raw material, and then they came back hidden, so as not to scratch the furniture since the jeans came out of the mines and factories, and have been for the day-to-day life of the population. The pants also do not have the red label on the pocket, which was only created a few years later to distinguish the jeans Levi’s of its competitors. Finally, the famous arches yellow in the pocket were sewn with machines of single needle. Today the arc is done with machines of two needles, that run in parallel and ensures that the arc uniform. The bows of old are more irregular.

The jeans of this time was not heavy. It is a good 501 raw for our climate because among the 501 vintages it is one of the lightest. It is made with denim selvedge red gross and not sanforizado, weighing 10 ounces (12 ounces after washing). Sanforização it is a process that shrinks the denim. It is pre shrunk, so that the clothing does not shrink when washing. The cotton is wet, stretched, pressed, dried, shrunk, leaving the fibers very close to each other (the process is more complicated than that). The sanforização ended up with a big problem, which was to guess the size that the cotton clothing would be after washing. The jeans that is not sanforizado has the fibers is more irregular, with much more texture.

The first wash (just wet and leave to dry) is very important when you purchase a jeans as well because it shrinks the cotton naturally, and the fibres are stronger. If you let the pant dry in the body, it will shrink with more customization, in length, and more or less 1 numbering in the waist. The rest of the pants don’t shrink so much and also if you loose with use. For the Levi’s 1933 I recommend buying your normal size, or 1 less if you want to use it more fair.

As I said at the beginning of the post, the Levi’s set up a cultural space in São Paulo that has some products in the LVC available for sale with amazing prices (it seems that the jeans are$ 150). Goes on there, or asks for that friend pauline. The Victor has published more details there at the site of him.

If you like retro and you have the opportunity, I recommend to search for pants Levis Vintage Clothing! You can start by online store of the blog, where I put the products mined in the bazaars and thrift stores, but only from the best brands.
