South America – Political Overview
Brazil, Mexico and Argentina are among the largest countries in the world in terms of population and area. Brazil ranks fifth in terms of population and area (24 times as large as Germany, 2.5 times as many residents).

BOUNDARIES
In South America, the borders have shifted slightly since 1825 without significantly changing the national structure. Today, Guiana is divided into Guyana (1966, formerly British), Suriname (1975, previously Dutch) and the former penal colony of French Guiana. The Chaco War changed the course of the border between Bolivia and Paraguay in the 1930s. Peru had to surrender some parts of the country to Chile in the south, but was able to expand in the north at the expense of Ecuador in 1942. After their occupation by Argentina in 1982, the Falkland Islands in the far south sparked a war with Great Britain that ended in a victory for British troops.

POPULATION GROUPS
The multiethnic South America is a result of colonial history in various phases. Until the late 15th century, there were only Native Americans living on the entire American continent. With the beginning of the conquest, Spanish and Portuguese colonists came along as well as the descendants of indigenous people and conquistadors. A little later, the first Africans reached the continent through the slave trade. In the 19th and 20th centuries there were strong waves of immigration from Europeans, but also to a very local immigration of Asians, especially from India. The structures within the individual states are very different. Countries like Argentina or Uruguay have an almost homogeneous population with European roots. In almost all states, the population has mixed heavily over time. This becomes clear in Colombia and Chile, for example, where two thirds of the population do not belong to a specific population group. The proportions of indigenous populations are greatest in Bolivia (> 50%) as well as Peru, Mexico and Guatemala (around a third). The largest population groups with an Asian background are in Guyana and Suriname. For more information about the continent of South America, please check neovideogames.com.
